Methanol provides a viable alternative to electro-fuels and ethanol as a road transport fuel. Methanol-rich fuel has excellent combustion properties for light-duty automotive applications and can be blended and distributed using existing transportation fuel infrastructure. It is already in commercial use in China in the form of an M15 blend. This consists of 85% gasoline and 15% methanol. Besides being used as a substitute for traditional gasoline fuel, this clean-burning fuel is a cost-effective solution for both the transport and shipping industry. For road transport, it can be either blended with gasoline in low or high proportions to help in reducing the carbon intensity of the fuel. Methanol-rich fuels have low energy content than regular gasoline, so fuel consumption does increase with the concentration of methanol in the fuel blend.
